How Protective Coatings Protect Steel
Protective coatings work in three ways. A good system usually combines all three.
Barrier Protection
The coating film blocks water, oxygen and corrosive agents from reaching the steel surface.
Inhibitive Protection
Certain pigments in the coating chemically slow down the corrosion reaction.
Self-healing / sacrificial action
Some systems continue to protect even after minor scratches, stopping corrosion from spreading under the film.
Identify Your Corrosivity Category
ISO 12944 is the international standard for protecting steel structures with protective paint systems. It sorts environments by how aggressive they are. This category drives every other decision in the specification.
